SHABNAM VIRMANI
Shabnam Virmani is a documentary film maker and artist in residence at the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore since 2002. She is a Co-founder of the Drishti Media Arts and Human Rights Collective, she has directed several documentaries, some of which have won awards. In 2002, she co-directed an award-winning community radio program with the Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan in Gujarat. She has performed Kabir's compositions in Rajasthan Kabir Yatra - a six-days long folk music festival and in Jashn e Rekhta. 7 years ago she started traveling with folk singers in Malwa, Rajasthan and Pakistan in a quest for the spiritual and socio-political resonances of the 15th century mystic poet Kabir in our contemporary worlds. She is the founder and Director of the Kabir Project,Bangalore. Inspired by the inclusive spirit of folk music, she has begun to play the tambura and sing folk songs of Kabir herself. Currently she is working on co-creating a web-museum of Kabir poetry & music with folk singer communities in India and developing ideas for taking mystic poetry and folk music to school classrooms.
She wins this award for, An insightful film that introduces us to the various cults that have grown around Kabir, the mystic weaver and saint. It explores the nuances of India's argumentative tradition as exemplified by Kabir's doha's and traces the eventful journey of one man caught in an Orwellian dilemma as he is elevated to the status of a cult leader, torn between the inevitable trappings of hierarchy that run paradoxical to the simple philosophy of Kabir.
EDUCATION
She did her Post-Graduate Diploma (Journalism), Times Research Foundation School for Social Journalism in New Delhi. After that she completed her Masters of Professional Studies (MPS) (Development Communication), Cornell University, USA.
WORK EXPERIENCE
She work as a Journalist with The Times of India, Jaipur edition. and also Co-founded Drishti Human Rights & Media Arts Collective in Ahmedabad, making community video films & radio programs with women’s groups & human rights movements, such as Ekta Parishad, Jan Vignan Vedika, Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan and others. Initiated the Kabir Project Kabir Yatra & Festival series of journeys into oral folk music traditions in a quest for the wisdom of Kabir & other mystics and Sufi poets for our contemporary worlds.
Implementing her words in my life:
For me she's my motivation for singing. My most favourite song (Bhajan) is (mat kar Maya ko ahankar). That song has some special power of words that means in this life is better with happiness don't think about name fame and money everything will be go and come. But the pure soul or heart always with you. And also she's my inspiration.
